Because each store's catalog is unique and merchants need flexibility in how products are presented, we provide the ability to showcase individual product variations directly in search results, rather than keeping them hidden inside a single product card: variant group-by options.
If this matches your merchandising strategy, Athos Commerce’s Display by Variant Option feature fulfills this requirement by letting you automatically split variant products into stand-alone variant listings based on your business needs.
This function is meant to surface individual variants in search results, making it easier for shoppers to find specific options, such as color, style, or size.
Once the feature is activated, it may help improve the following:
- Click-through rate
- Conversion rate
- Add-to-cart rate
- Revenue per search or per session
What is the Display by Variant option?
The Display by Variant option allows you to display individual product variants as their own separate search and category results, instead of showing a single variant's parent product.
For example: A shirt comes in four colors (red, blue, black, and white) and five sizes (XS, S, M, L, XL). A standard search typically displays only one product card. If your layout requires displaying products by color, this feature allows you to show four different tiles (one for each color). If your strategy requires displaying them by size, you can configure it to show five different tiles (one for each size) directly on the page.
How it works
- Flexible setup: Select a single option to group by (such as color, material, or pattern) within your data attribute settings to match your storefront requirements.
- Intelligent fallbacks: If a product does not carry the chosen option (e.g., grouping by "color" when a product is a one-size tool), the system safely defaults to a standard single product card so your layout never breaks.
- Full platform support: Fully supported across Shopify, Magento 2, BigCommerce, and custom feeds (csv, json, xml).
- Unified presentation: Once configured, items display consistently across search, search preview, and visual merchandising.
