Shoppers sometimes use the search function to look for answers rather than products — such as contact info for your store, a size chart, or shipping costs. If their search doesn’t return helpful results, it can create confusion or dead ends. Redirects help solve this by sending shoppers directly to a specific URL when they search for certain terms. You can manage redirects from the Redirects page in the console.
Note: Too many redirects can affect key performance indicators (KPIs) in searches, as they do not count as searches and will not be reflected in the searches report.
The best practice is to set up redirects for quick links you list at the bottom of your home page, such as size charts, fit guides, return policies, shipping charges, and FAQs. Redirects are a great resource for pointing to URLs for resources you can quickly redirect shoppers to.
You can also use redirects for common search terms that don’t return meaningful results, or if you want shoppers to land on a dedicated page instead of search results. For example, you may find that customers searching for "shirts" don't end up on your specific "Shirts" category page. In this case, you could configure a redirect to send shoppers to "http://yoursite.com/shirts" instead of the search results page.
Adding New Redirects
Add redirects by clicking the "Add Redirects" button in the top right corner. A new window will appear so you can customize a search term and its redirect URL.
In the Search Term(s) field, type in a search term (or multiple search terms separated by a comma).
In the "Redirect to URL" field, type in the URL where the customer should be sent.
Note: You can use either full URLs or relative URLs (e.g., /returns).
Click the "Discard" button at the bottom right to cancel your changes, or click the "Create Redirect" button to save your changes.
On the main Redirects page, the following information is displayed:
Search all redirects box
Type in a word or phrase and press <Enter> to search among all redirects that have been defined.
Search Term(s)
The Search column contains all the queries you have created redirects for. Multiple keywords can redirect to the same URL if the keywords are separated by commas.
Redirects to
The URL column shows where you want your shoppers to be sent. You may use full links or relative URLs here (such as "/returns").
Options
Click the "..." icon under "Options" to choose Edit or Delete.
Edit
If you choose "Edit", a new window will open and allow you to modify the existing redirect.
Delete
Redirects may be removed by checking the Delete box and then clicking the "Delete Checked" button on the left side.
Note: Once saved, redirects do not need the account data to be synced for them to be applied to your search results.
Downloading Redirects
To download a CSV file of all existing redirects, click the Download button (a down-facing arrow) in the top right corner of the page. The file will contain all redirect search terms and their corresponding destination URLs.
