By default, Athos reduces words down to its root or base form when searching, so that different forms of a word can be treated as equivalent — a process known as "stemming". Words like "running," "runner," "ran," and "runs" might all be reduced to the stem "run". This ensures that we capture the intent of the shopper.
To override this behavior, you can configure an Exact Match. Search Terms entered here will generate search results that are specific only to that keyword. An exact match prevents stemming so that a search will return the exact term your shoppers are looking for.
An exact match prevents the search function from stemming the root term.
For example, if a customer searches for "beds" on a furniture store's site, our system would continue to capture and stem every iteration of the query, meaning that “bed”, “beds”, and “bedding” would all be considered the same search term. However, “bed(s)” and “bedding” are two very different things: "Bed" is the actual frame or mattress, while "bedding" represents the linens used to dress the mattress (sheets, comforters, duvets, etc.). As a retailer, you may choose to override this behavior by setting up an exact match for "bed" or "bedding" to ensure that the result set is as accurate as it can be per query.
After these exact matches have been added, "bed(s)" will only return types of “beds” and "bedding" will only return actual bedding products.
Adding an Exact Match
New words may be added by clicking on the "Add Exact Match" button. A new window will appear, in which you can enter a single word. After defining the search term, click the "Create Exact Match" button in the bottom right corner, or click the "Discard" button to cancel your changes.
Search Term
In the Search Term box, type in the words for this search term.
When you are done, click the "Discard" button to cancel your changes, or click the "Create Exact Match" button to save your changes.
Status
In order for an exact word match to be processed, the toggle must be switched to "Enabled". This change automatically saves. If you want to disable a word without deleting it, simply toggle the setting to "Disabled". Any updates to the status will take effect the next time your data is synced.
Editing or Deleting an Exact Match
You can edit or delete any words you have added by clicking the "..." button under the "Options" column and choosing "Edit" or "Delete".
If you click "Edit", a new window will appear in which you can modify the search term.
Once you have made your changes, click the "Save Exact Match" button in the lower right corner, or click the "Discard" button to cancel your changes and close this window.
If you click the "Delete" button under the Options menu, a new window will appear and ask you to confirm deletion of the exact match. Click the "Confirm Delete" button in the lower right corner to delete the exact match, or click the "Cancel" button to cancel the deletion.
