Some retailers need the ability to override specific terms in a customer's search query. This occurs when a customer searches for a keyword that is no longer relevant and receives results that are not useful. The most common use case for query replacement is to help users with common spelling errors. On the Query Replacement page, you can configure words that will replace other keywords.
Query replacements serve a different function than synonyms. With synonyms, the system will find similar items and include the original search term as well, but query replacements will ignore the original search term and replace it with the term defined on this page.
Tip: Use the Zero Results Report to find search terms that return no results — such as common misspellings or outdated product names — and replace them with more relevant terms to improve the shopper experience.
- Another retailer selling phone cases has a query replacement configured to change the search term "iPhone 10" to the replacement term "iPhone X".
- Another store sells products by the brand "Happy Pets", but the manufacturer has changed its name to "Wonderful Pets". If shoppers still search for "Happy Pets", setting up a query replacement for "Happy Pets" to "Wonderful Pets" will direct shoppers to relevant results.
